Students were busy throughout the last 12 months raising funds for the Mayor’s Charity – Guide Dogs. Students raised an amazing total sum of £3,555.00 which was presented the charity at an assembly on Thursday 12th November, which the Mayor attended.
Diane Moore from the Guide Dogs training centre in Atherton attended the assembly along with a local guide dog owner, Wyn Rendle and her guide dog Lacey. Wyn spoke to the students and explained how having a guide dog can give a blind person independence and increase their confidence.
Students raised this fantastic total in many ingenious ways … with one form alone raising over £1,000. Students did sponsored walks, pie throwing competitions, a Manchester United football shirt raffle; sponge throwing (at teachers); lunchtime bingo; a staff bleep test! There were so many activities across the entire school – it was amazing!
Diane Moore told students that with the amount of money raised, they could name two guide dogs. Students have previously sponsored a guide dog puppy who they named ‘Cookie’ when they raised £5,000 in 2011.
Headteacher Carlton Bramwell saids: “This is my first Harvest Assembly and I am overwhelmed with the amount of money raised by our children. They are very creative in their efforts to raise money and their enthusiasm and pride in raising funds to help charities is admirable. To raise £3,555.00 is an amazing amount and will help a lot of people with vision impairment to get out and about in our community.
Well done to all our students and thanks to the staff for participating in their fundraising schemes!”
