To help our Year 7 students to feel part of the Westleigh Community, Mrs Watling, Miss Lovatt and Mrs Coleman arranged for 3 enrichment evenings to take place which are designed to ease the transition into secondary school and help the Y7 students to make new friends. Also, as our Y11 Student Leaders had been assigned to Y7 students as ‘buddies’ they also wanted to get involved in organising and running these events, which really helped. The first night that took place was a ‘Movie Night’ and Y7 students were invited to come into school and watch a movie together. The Student Leaders sold tickets for the event, signed the students in, sold popcorn/crisps and drinks and made sure that everyone had a great time and left with lots of new friends! The second night was arranged over Halloween and so the students (and staff) all dressed up for a ‘spooktacular’ night! The outside area was set up as a ‘spooky garden’ and the classrooms were all set up with ‘spooky and scary’ activities such as – ‘terror pin bowling’, ‘a spiders web maze’; ‘eyeball’ & spoon race; a gunge bucket and apple string bobbing! At the end of the evening, there were lots of prizes for the forms who had won the most points during the different games! It was a ‘horrible’ event enjoyed by all! The final event planned is the Christmas Disco, where students can dress up, have a dance and maybe even a few Strictly Ballroom moves will be showcased! This is the first year we have introduced these evenings and they have been very popular. The Y11 Student Leaders have loved getting involved and it has helped them to share how they felt when they first started school. Welcome to Westleigh Year 7 … we hope you’ve loved it so far!
